Travel To Skiddaw

There are many ways you can get to Skiddaw if you live within the UK and are not immediately local to Skiddaw, the easiest option would be to drive. Below are the different transport options on how to get to the base of the mountain. 

- Car 

There is one main route up Skiddaw and one main parking location which is the Gale road car park.

- Train 

There is no public transport to the location of Skiddaw however the nearest train station to Skiddaw is Penrith Station.

Skiddaw Routes

There is one main route up Skiddaw called the Jenkin Hill path.

Stage 1

This route starts from the Gale road car park, however you can start from Keswick. From the car park you will climb the stile and walk along the path to skiddaw there will be a arrow pointing in the direction of Skiddaw.

Stage 2

Follow this path and ahead you will see the steepest part of the acsent in the distance with a zig zag path going upwards. This first section of the ascent only goes on for a few 100 meters.

Stage 3

Once you reach the top of the steep zig zag section you will bare left and follow the path towards the summit of skiddaw. A little while along the path splits and you can choose to climb over the summit of little man peak or go around the right of this peak, they these paths both meet again to follow onto the final ascent of skiddaw.

Stage 4

after walking up a steep scree path to where the paths meet the gradient will decrease slightly as you gradually walk across the skiddaw skyline to the top of Skiddaw. Once at the top you will spot the trig point and the cairn that makes the summit.

How Hard Is It To Climb Up Skiddaw?

Skiddaw Navigation

The main route up Skiddaw can be fairly simple on a clear day, however in bad conditions it can be difficult because of the low visibility. Most the climb you will be high up the path and if you are unable to see the mountain in the distance it can be quite tricky to know which path to take, navigation skills when climbing this mountain would be advised.

What do i need to bring when climbing up Skiddaw?

The ideal kit list when climbing Skiddaw will vary slightly depending on what season you are climbing in, in the winter you will need warmer clothes and base layers etc, however the essentials will pretty much stay the same.

Warm and waterproof clothing

These items are essential all year round due to the temperamental conditions on Skiddaw, in the summer it may be hot at the base of the mountain, however the conditions will get slightly cooler and could become drastically worse at the the top, due to this make sure you bring waterproofs and warm clothing up with you.

A pair of good walking boots

You will need a pair of decent walking boots regardless of the weather or temperature when climbing Skiddaw.
